How to do it: Succession and Only Murders uptown
Two very different kinds of money, a park apart. Only Murders in the Building keeps to the Upper West Side: the Belnord’s courtyard, the Dakota and Lincoln Center. Succession lives on the Upper East Side, where the Roys eat, drink and finally bury their father.
Start at Columbus Circle and work north on the West Side, cross the park on the 86th Street crosstown bus, then finish on the East Side with a late lunch at the diner that plays the Pickle Diner.
- The order to do it in
- Jean-Georges, Alice Tully Hall, the Dakota, the Belnord; M86 bus across the park; the American Irish Historical Society, the Mark, Nectar, St. Ignatius Loyola, the Mansion.
- When to go
- A weekday from late morning. The church is quietest between weekday Masses, and the diners are busy at weekend brunch.
- Getting there
- Start at 59 St–Columbus Circle (A B C D 1). The Belnord is by 86 St (1). The M86 Select Bus runs across Central Park on 86th Street. Finish near 86 St (Q) or (4 5 6).
- What to bring
- A MetroCard or contactless card for the crosstown bus, and some cash for diner tips.
- What it costs
- Free to walk. Lunch at Jean-Georges or a hotel drink is a splurge; the diners are the cheap end.
Worth knowing
- The Belnord and the Dakota are private homes. Look through the gates from the sidewalk; the doormen will not let you into the courtyard.
- St. Ignatius Loyola is a working parish. Step in quietly, and not during funerals or weddings.
- The walk is about 3.5 miles with the bus, a little over 2 hours plus food.
