Date night classes in NYC: what an evening for two costs

19 classes two people can book together for one evening — no term, no membership, no experience — across 3 boroughs: the wheel, candles, rings, a side table, a sewing machine. Each one priced for two, from $76 up, and read off the studio's own page in September and October 2026.

Most “date night ideas” lists send you to a paint-and-sip. These are the classes where you leave with something fired, poured or built, and we have written down which ones let you bring a bottle.

The short answer

The cheapest date-night class in New York is a weeknight one-off at Brooklyn Brainery in Prospect Heights: $38 a head, so $76 for two, materials included. The cheapest with a drink in hand is a candle class — Vela in Hell's Kitchen is $46 a person and BYOB wine or beer, Wick and Pour in Nolita is from $50 and BYOB until 10pm every night, and 2nd Chance Candles in Astoria is $59 with wine included.

For pottery, the Friday-night rate is $85 a person at BKLYN CLAY (Prospect Heights and Tribeca, 7:30pm) and at Myrtle's Clayhouse in Ridgewood — $170 for two. The studios that print a couple's price charge $200 (Pottery Studio 1, Clay Space) or $250 (Off Center Ceramics, Gotham Pottery) for the pair.

Pick by the kind of evening you want

You want a drink in hand — candles

Candle classes are the only ones here that are routinely BYOB: Wick and Pour, Vela The Candle Kitchen, 2nd Chance Candles. They run an hour or two, cost $46 to $90 a head, and you walk out with the candle the same night. Nothing to collect later.

You want to come back for something — pottery

Every pottery class on the list fires what you make for pickup two to four weeks later, which is either a built-in second date or a chore, depending. Handbuilding (Greenwich House) is easier to talk through than the wheel.

You want a Friday — 5 studios

BKLYN CLAY, Myrtle’s Clayhouse, Back Porch Studios, KraftStories (Midtown), Brooklyn Stitch Studio all run a named Friday-evening class. Everything else on the page is dated session by session, or daily.

You want it to mean something — rings

Two Brooklyn and Garment District studios teach couples to make rings, including each other’s wedding bands. They are private bookings, not classes, and priced like it: budget hundreds, not tens.

You want to spend as little as possible — a weeknight

Brooklyn Brainery’s 6pm one-offs are $38 to $65 a head with materials, Monday to Thursday. Pair it with Vanderbilt Avenue afterwards and the whole evening is under $150 for two.

You want something to keep — wood

Craftsman Ave in Industry City builds an oak side table or a longboard in one three-to-four-hour afternoon. At $265 a head it is the dearest thing here that is not a wedding ring, and the only one you will still own in ten years.

Pottery for two

One-off wheel and handbuilding sessions; every one fires your piece for pickup later. The couple rates are what the studio prints for a pair.

4 studios print a price for a couple; the rest price per head. Materials and firing are included unless the row says otherwise; booking fees are not.

No price we could print

Artshack Brooklyn — Date Night — A nonprofit studio whose prices sit only inside the booking system, not on its pages, so we cannot print one. Worth the click if Bed-Stuy is home: it is the only date-night pottery east of the G.

Fitzgerald Jewelry — stacking rings — Private, not group: the booking is yours alone, which is why it is priced the way it is. The pages print $250 for the stacking-ring workshop without saying whether a couple pays once or twice, so ask for the total for two before booking. Over-18s only.

I Love You Rings — A couples’ ring studio rather than a class — the premise is that you each make the other’s ring. The workshop pages print no price at all, only that custom rings “usually start from $900”, so this is an engagement budget, not a Friday one.

Before you book

A couple rate is not always the cheaper ticket

Off Center’s $250 date night is $60 more than two of its $95 First Throw tickets; Clay Space’s $200 ClayDate is $20 more than two TryNights, and TryNight is the one that promises a glazed piece in writing. Ask what the couple rate adds before paying for it.

Check what gets fired

At Gotham Pottery the $90 workshop does not glaze your piece and the $120 one does. Several booking pages say nothing about firing at all; the ones that do are marked in the tables above.

BYOB has rules

Vela allows wine, beer and seltzer only, 21+, no food. Wick and Pour allows drinks but no food. Back Porch pours the wine itself and admits 21+ only. Nobody on this list allows spirits in writing.

Fridays book out first

BKLYN CLAY runs the same class at two studios every Friday and Saturday, which is why it is the fallback. Fitzgerald asks for about three weeks’ notice for a weekend slot.

One ticket each

Per-person classes want one booking per seat, even for a pair. The couple-rate studios sell one ticket for two; do not buy two of those.

The cheap one has no bar

Brooklyn Brainery is a classroom, not a studio with a drinks licence. It is also the only entry here where a whole evening for two is under $80.

Questions people ask

What is a good date night class in NYC?+
The three that come up most are a pottery taster, a candle class and a ring workshop. For pottery, BKLYN CLAY’s Friday and Saturday 7:30pm TryDay Night is $85 a person in Prospect Heights or Tribeca. For candles, Vela in Hell’s Kitchen ($46, BYOB) and Wick and Pour in Nolita (from $50, BYOB, open until 10pm) are the easiest to book. For rings, Fitzgerald Jewelry in Williamsburg and I Love You Rings in the Garment District teach couples privately.
How much is a couples pottery class in NYC?+
Studios that print a couple price charge $200 (Pottery Studio 1 on the Bowery and five other sites; Clay Space in Greenpoint) or $250 (Off Center Ceramics in Williamsburg; Gotham Pottery in Chelsea). Studios that price per head work out at $170 for two at $85 each (BKLYN CLAY, Myrtle’s Clayhouse) and $210 at Greenwich House Pottery’s $105 Handmade Happy Hour.
Are there BYOB classes in NYC?+
Yes, mostly candle classes: Wick and Pour (Nolita and West Village), Vela The Candle Kitchen (Hell’s Kitchen, wine, beer and seltzer only) and 2nd Chance Candles (Astoria, which also includes wine). Back Porch Studios on the Upper West Side and Brooklyn Stitch Studio’s Sip and Sew in Gowanus include the drinks in the price. How this page was made, and who made it

Every price was read off the studio's own booking page in September and October 2026, during the same checks that built our pottery, candle and maker guides, plus the dated evening classes on our own calendar. “For two” is the lowest standard adult price for one session, doubled, unless the studio prints a couple rate — in which case that is the figure, marked as such.

This site is published by KraftStories, a craft studio that runs a $59 candle class in Midtown. It is in the candle table because leaving it out would be stranger than disclosing it; the row says so.

Our editorial standards spell out the rest.
