The guide
How to do it: Spider-Man, John Wick and Gossip Girl
Three franchises that treat Manhattan as a playground. John Wick checks into the Continental on Wall Street and fights his way uptown; Spider-Man swings past the Flatiron to the Roosevelt Island tram; Gossip Girl’s Upper East Siders hold court at Grand Central, the Palace and the Met steps.
This list runs from the Financial District to East Harlem in one long day, mostly on the subway. Do the downtown stops in the morning and save the Met steps for the afternoon.
- The order to do it in
- Beaver Building, the Oculus, Doyers Street, Joe’s Pizza, the Flatiron, the library, Grand Central, the Palace, the Roosevelt Island tram, Bethesda Terrace, the Met steps, the Museum of the City of New York.
- When to go
- A weekday, starting at 9am. Wall Street is quiet before the office crowds, and the Met steps are busiest after 2pm.
- Getting there
- Start at Wall St (2 3). Doyers Street is a 20-minute walk from the Oculus; the 1 runs to Houston St for Joe’s Pizza; the R/W and 6 cover Midtown; the 4/5/6 and the Fifth Avenue buses go uptown. Finish at 103 St (6).
- What to bring
- A contactless card for a lot of subway rides, and comfortable shoes.
- What it costs
- Free except subway fares and a slice. The tram is one subway fare each way; the Met and the Museum of the City of New York charge admission.
Worth knowing
- The Beaver Building has apartments above: photograph it from the sidewalk.
- The Cunard Building at 25 Broadway, a ten-minute walk from the Continental, is where the hotel’s grand lobby was filmed. It is an event space, so look through the doors only.
- Skip ahead to the tram if you are short of time; it is the best view on the list.
