An upright piano is wheeled out onto the Bryant Park terrace on weekday afternoons and anyone who can play is welcome to sit down at it. No sign-up, no schedule of performers — what you hear depends entirely on who walks past, which is either the best or worst thing about it. Yellow umbrellas on the north side of the park, free books and newspapers under them, and a full week of free literary programming: author talks on Wednesday lunchtimes, poetry on Tuesday evenings, storytime for two- to eight-year-olds on Tuesday mornings, a writers' workshop on Thursday evenings. Open daily 11am to 7pm through the end of September.

A free 45-minute tour of the park's history — the reservoir, the Depression-era redesign, the 1980s rescue — leaving from the Josephine Shaw Lowell fountain at 11am every Monday, year-round. Register on Eventbrite; parties of six or more need a private tour instead.

WEEKDAYS · NOONJuggling

The Bryant Park jugglers meet on the lawn every weekday lunchtime, Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Equipment is provided and all skill levels are welcome, including none. Free, year-round, and one of the oldest standing free activities in the park — though the Saturday session disappears after December.

Bryant Park's lawn opens for its thirty-third season of Monday-night films — the oldest and by some distance the largest outdoor film series in the city. The lawn opens at five and people queue before that for a good spot; the film starts at sunset. Free, no ticket, no registration, and the surrounding blocks are the easiest place in Midtown to pick up food on the way. B, D, F or M to 42 St–Bryant Park, or the 7 to Fifth Av.

The lawn opens at five, the film starts at eight, and thousands of people eat dinner on a blanket in the middle of Midtown. Free, no booking, first come first served. Four Mondays remain in the 2026 season — King Creole, No Country for Old Men, Galaxy Quest and Shakespeare in Love — and then it is over until next summer.

Fall migration brings warblers through a park in the middle of Midtown, and Gabriel Willow walks you round to see them. Free, no pre-registration, meeting at the info kiosk on Sixth Avenue across from 41st Street. The autumn season runs 1 September to 10 October only — Tuesday mornings at 8am, Thursday and Friday evenings at 5pm.

Free board games, mah jongg, Catan and whatever the Friday crowd brings, on the south side of the park near the carousel. Equipment provided, all ages, no booking — Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 5pm, Thursday at 3pm and Saturday at 1pm.

WEDNESDAYS · FREE · SUMMER SEASONKnitting at Bryant Park

Free knitting instruction on the Upper Terrace gravel by the Gertrude Stein monument, closest to 40th Street, taught by volunteers from Knitty City — the Upper West Side yarn shop — with yarn and needles provided. It runs weekly through the summer and it is weather permitting, so a wet Wednesday means no class rather than a rain location. This is the only free tutored textiles session we track in Midtown; the paid alternative is a term at a Brooklyn studio for a few hundred dollars. B, D, F or M to 42 St–Bryant Park.

A free outdoor festival that has been running since May and closes on 11 September with the American Symphony Orchestra marking the 25th anniversary of September 11th. Between now and then: a choir festival, an accordion festival, a brass festival and Parallel Exit's Sunset Circus. Start times vary by night — some 5pm, some 6pm, most 7pm — so check the date you want. No registration, no queue.
