Three hours restoring Plank Road, one of the very few public access points on Newtown Creek — cutting back knotweed, clearing the shoreline, planting trees. Gloves, tools, safety vests and guidance provided; bring sturdy shoes and a water bottle. Free, waivers for adults and minors, so families can take part. The fifth annual edition, and the only Superfund shoreline on our calendar.

Evening shifts at the Newtown Native Greenhouse in Greenpoint, potting up and weeding the native plants that get planted out on the Kingsland Wildflowers green roof and along the creek. An on-site horticulturist runs the session; a liability waiver is required, and minors are welcome with the right form. Free. Newtown Creek Alliance publishes this as a growing-season series running to early October — confirm the next date with them before you travel, as their own listings disagree about the cadence.
